Makhana Kheer

In India, these Lotus seeds are commonly ref
erred to as Makhana. Usually people consume it during their fasts or even use it as an ingredient in Indian cuisines or sweet dishes. However, not many people are aware of its health benefits and nutritional value. Lotus seeds are low in cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium. They are an extremely good source of manganese, potassium,magnesium, thiamine, proteinphosphorus and calcium.

Preparation Time : 10 min

Cooking Time : 1 hour

Ingredients :

Milk – 2 Lt

Makhana- 1 cup

Sugar – 2 tbsp

Pistachio - 1 tsp (grated)

Cashew – 1 tsp (chopped)

Almond – 1 tsp (grated)

Saffron – 1/4 tsp

Cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp

Method :

  1. Take a non stick pan and pour milk in it.
  2. Put the pan on high flame and let the milk boil.
  3. Stir occasionally.
  4. After 1/2 hour add makhana and sugar and saffron.
  5. Reduce the flame to medium low.
  6. Let it boil for another 1/2 hour.
  7. Stir occasionally.
  8. Off the flame , transfer kheer to serving bowl.
  9. Add cardamom powder.
  10. Garnish it with dry fruits.
  11. Serve it hot or chilled , it is healthy and tasty in both the ways.
